PURPOSE:
Used to help control seizures. Present indication is in the treatment of focal or
partial seizures.
HOW LONG TO CONTINUE GIVING:
To give until your doctor advises you how and when to discontinue. Medication
should never be stopped abruptly. If this were done, it is possible seizures
may increase.
WHEN TO HAVE BLOOD LEVEL CHECKED:
Blood levels are not necessary.
NEED TO MIX WITH FOOD:
May be taken with or without food. Capsules can be split and powder mixed with small
amount of water or juice.
HOW TO TAKE:
Take exactly as instructed by your doctor. If you should miss a dose, the level in your
blood will drop, increasing the risk for more seizures. Also, it will take several days
for the level to return to normal.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Side effects are uncommon. There have been no major side effects to date. However, this
is a relatively new medication, so if you notice any changes that are not normal it is
important you notify your doctor. The most commonly observed side effects are:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Unsteadiness
- Fatigue or feeling tired
- Nystagmus (tremulous movements of the eyes)
- Tremor
IMPORTANT POINTS:
- This medication is removed from the body by the kidneys. If there are kidney problems,
your doctor should be informed. It may be necessary to reduce the dosage.
- There is little information about the effects of Neurontin on a developing baby. Females
taking this medication should discuss risk and possible alternatives with their doctor
before becoming pregnant.
- This medication does not interfere with the effectiveness of the birth control pill.
- It is safe to take over the counter medication with neurontin. There are no known
medication interactions with prescribed therapies such as antibiotics. However, your
family doctor should be aware that you are taking this medication.
